Climbing

on Vancouver Island, BC

Few, if any, areas rival the British Columbia coast for climbing possibilities. From the downtown gyms to the summit of Mt Fairweather climbing takes many forms on the coast, but always spectacular and unequalled.

Vancouver Island

Horne Lake - Vancouver Island limestone, steep roofs, chert edges. Horne Lake, Vancouver Island is closed to climbing until further notice. The owner of the land, Texada Logging Ltd., plans to log the area around the cliffs.  For safety, the company asks that climbers not climb there.

Strathcona Park - 1000m alpine routes on Mt Colonel Foster. Hundreds of granite bluffs scattered in remote alpine meadows around Mt Myra. Sport in the rainforest at Crest Creek.

Mainland:

Squamish - Granite walls with long aid & free lines, highway access and top rope problems with all the crag-base conviniences of a bustling town.

Eldred Valley - Numerous granite walls strewn up Coast Range valley behind Powell River on the Sunshine Coast.

Chekamus Canyon -

Waddington Range - Some of the longest alpine walls in North America. Mt Waddington itself boasts one of North America's "50 Classic Climbs", the South Face. Approached up huge fjordal inlets, arcing glaciers and with aircraft.
