Wild Isle - Activities - Climbing - Vancouver Island

The history of climbing on Vancouver Island could be thought of as being born by the 1910 ascent of Elkhorn Mountain by an Alpine Club of Canada party led by A.O. Wheeler. Since then the main summits have all been climbed and many of the finer alpine lines scooped, yet climbing on the island is still in its infancy. Mt Colonel Foster (pictured below) boasts impressive 1,000m+ walls yet only received its first ascent in 1968. The island's highest peak the Golden Hinde waited until 1993 for a winter ascent. In more accessible low elevation areas rock climbing crags such as Crest Creek and Horne Lake are now being developed at a fantastic rate as local climbers' numbers have finally swelled enough to prompt this level of activity and enthusiasm. |
