14 Days - June 10-24, 2012
- Spectacular floatplane flight over Nootka Sound
- Hike two spectacular parts of BC's west coast
- Sea kayak among the islands and rock reefs of the Nuchatlitiz
The west coast of Vancouver Island is one of the most spectacular environments on Earth and should be on the shortlist of every wilderness seeker. Join us in experiencing the very best hiking and sea kayaking in a combination trekking and paddling trip from Kyuquot Sound to Nootka Island.
We meet at Strathcona Park Lodge, a lakeside outdoor education centre and outdoor adventure destination amongst the mountains of Vancouver Island. On departure day a short drive takes us to the bustling west coast port of Gold River from where we take a breathtaking floatplane flight through Nootka Sound and land at the sweeping whitesand beaches of Rugged Point.
A three day hike down the Tatchu Peninsula takes us along sandy beaches and exquiste sandstone rock shelves to the mouth of Esperanza Inlet. After a night camping at Yellow Bluff we load our gear into sea kayaks and head across the mouth of Esperanza Inlet past Catala Island and the Nuchatlitz.
Nuchatlitz is renowned as one of the premier kayaking destinations in British Columbia and we take our time to soak up the dramatic Pacific Ocean scenery and First Nations' culture it is famous for. After three nights among the islands, rock reefs and divine beaches we cross Nuchatlitiz Inlet and enter the sheltered waters of Starfish Lagoon at the north end of the famous Nootka trail.
Saying goodbye to the kayaks we pack our backpacks once again and head through the primordial forest to the outside coast of Nootka Island. For five days we wander down the west coast of Nootka Island. The Nootka trail has grown a reputation as a quieter and no-less spectacular alternative to the world-famous West Coast Trail.
The moderate hiking route passes through gorgeous coves, across more amazing beaches and by cascading waterfalls all at the edge of the Pacific Ocean.
At the south end of the Nootka Trail we enter the historic First Nations village of Yuquot (Friendly Cove) where Captain Cook landed and traded with the Mowachaht/Muchalaht people in the late-1700s. The village is also famous for the historic Nootka Convention which averted a war between Britian and Spain over their respective claims in North America.
At Yuquot we finish our trek and board the M.V. Uchuck lll for a leisurely cruise aboard this working freight boat back up Muchalet Inlet to the dock at Gold River. An hour drive takes us back to Strathcona Park Lodge for showers, clean sheets and a last meal together to celebrate an incredible wilderness journey.
